- Schools must become more active in telling how we must act in order to avoid dangerous climate change.
This was the message from Dag A. Hoystad, working with energy in SPARE, to teachers and youth leaders at the UNEP children’s conference TUNZA. The conference takes place in Stavanger Norway from 15th to 20th of June 2008, and gathers children and youth leaders from 105 countries.
Høystad was leading a presentation for chaperones at the TUNZA conference, with energy efficiency and education as topic.
- Climate change was not a question for our parents. This is a new an urgent global situation. In this question we cannot depend on the parent’s upbringing alone, the schools must become much more active, Høystad told the audience in his presentation.
He also said that many organizations and school already are active, but that learning about energy, the environmental impact and how to reduce the energy use through efficiency should be an important part of every child’s education. Knowledge, awareness and practical actions are what we need now.
Energy efficiency is the fastest and cheapest way to reduce emissions of green house gases from the energy sector. Many simple cost effective measures depend on participation from ordinary citizens. Although each individual measure is small, it sums up to huge results when implemented globally.
